1967 World Champion, Denny Hulme, sat in his McLaren M19 (nicknamed The Alligator Car).

Having qualified 3rd, Denny had a stonking start – jumping into the lead ahead of pole man, Jackie Stewart.

His lead was short-lived and by the end of the first lap, Denny had slipped back behind the Scott and 13 laps later, behind Jackie’s teammate, François Cevert.

Denny’s McLaren had developed terrible tyre vibrations, forcing the Kiwi to drop back further. Things went from bad to worse when the alternator of Jacky Ickx’s Ferrari fell off, punching a hole in the gearbox and spilling oil all over the track which Denny then hit, spinning him off into the Armco barriers and into retirement.

While Denny watch from the side-lines, Frenchman François Cevert went on to win the race - his one and only career win, the first for a French driver since Maurice Trintignant in 1958.
