Inspired by one of the most outstanding drivers of the 60s, Jim Clark. The gentle Scot who swapped the twists and turns of the 1965 Monaco Grand Prix for the opportunity to race the Indy 500 - which he won in brilliant style.

Clark - 500

  • Jim Clark never understood why other drivers weren’t as quick as himself. He once asked a friend why everyone was going so slowly. ‘It’s not that everyone’s going so slowly,’ his friend told him, ‘it’s that you’re going so damn fast.’  This same friend gave the shy sheep farmer the confidence he lacked. Something he’d need plenty of in an era notorious for its danger.

The fearsome 1960 Spa GP was Clark’s second only race and he admitted to being scared stiff throughout it. With good reason. There were two serious accidents before the race and two fatal ones during it. Despite this, Clark finished 5th. Fast forward to an horrendously wet Spa in 1963 and Clark drove what was arguably his greatest race. From 8th, he passed everyone and by lap 17, there was only one other driver on the same lap. He won by a full 5 minutes. It was an incredible race in a record-breaking season that saw him take the first of his two World Championships.

    Then there was Indy!...

...Having previously entered the Indy 500 in 1963 & 1964, Jim Clark finally won the race in 1965 to become the 1st non-American winner since 1916. Driving his beloved Lotus 38/1, Clark led 190 of the 200 laps, clocking up an average speed of over 150mph & claiming the first Indy win for a rear-engined car at the world famous track. At the time of his death in 1968, he’d won more races (25) and achieved more poles (33) than any other driver.

Clark has been voted the 3rd greatest driver of all time behind Senna and Fangio. Would that baffle him too? Probably.

    The inks we use:

We only use water-based inks to print our tees. Free from the PVC or phthalates toxic ingredients found in Plastisol inks, water-based inks aren't only kinder to the environment, they give our designs a softer, more natural feel. Because, unlike Plastisol inks, water-based inks actually blend into the fabric as opposed to sitting on the top.

Formulated free from lead and other heavy metals, the inks we use have passed the Oeko-Tex Class 1 standard with 60% to spare. That means they don’t contain ozone-depleting chemicals such as CFC's and HCFC's, aromatic hydrocarbons or any volatile solvents. Basically, all the bad stuff. What's more, when it comes to cleaning our screens, we don't need to use solvents - just good old fashioned plain water.

So why doesn't everyone print with water-based inks? Well, quite simply, it can be a massive pain in the derrière.
You see, unlike Plastisol inks, which can be left on a screen for hours and hours without drying out, water-based inks have to be worked with quickly as they have a tendency to dry out before you can say “Mansell is slowing it down, taking it easy. Oh no he isn't! It's a lap record” (good old Murray) and clog the screen you're printing your design through.
