Following the deaths of Tom Pryce at the South African Grand Prix and Carlos Pace in a light aircraft crash, the teams arrived at the US Grand Prix West in sombre mood.
Located at Long Beach, the street track was tight, dusty and bumpy. Yet, with minimal upgrades to the Ferrari 312T2’s of Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann, they still managed to power their drivers to 1st and 4th on the grid respectively.
Unfortunately for Carlos, his 80-lap race didn’t start (or end) well - locking up into the first corner, Carlos slid straight on and up the slip road before re-joining at the back of the pack – coming together with American driver Brett Lunger’s March-Ford 4 laps later and retiring with damaged suspension.
It wasn’t all bad news for the American crowds though as Mario Andretti, driving a Lotus-Ford won the race – holding off Niki Lauda’s Ferrari to become the first American to win a Formula One race on home soil – not to mention, giving the ground-effect Lotus 78 its first victory.
