Turning up to the penultimate race of the 1972 season, the Tyrrell team must have felt deflated.
2 weeks earlier in Monza, their No.1 driver had lost the championship to Emerson Fittipaldi and now his race car had a problem.
As Jackie Stewart’s Tyrrell 005 was readied for the practice session the big toothed drive belt located on the front of the engine broke. And while team mate, François Cevert made the most of his new 006, Jackie had to make do with an older 004.
It took the Tyrrell mechanics a session and a half to fix the 005, but they did it - and Jackie set off to claim 5th on the grid, one place higher than his team mate in the new 006.
And while the gearbox of François’ new car forced him to retire, Jackie took his to a richly deserved victory - something we’re sure would have put a smile back on the faces of each and every mechanic.
